DESCRIPTION: \nA Rare Field Experience at Tomas Darling Preserve\nJoin Wildlands Conservancy and the Ruffed Grouse Society for a unique wildlife experience in the heart of the Pocono Mountains. This program is perfect for nature lovers and families who want to explore wildlife habitat up close and learn how conservation work supports forest-dwelling species. This special two-hour program offers exclusive access to our Tomas Darling Preserve, where Wildlands is actively restoring healthy, diverse forests that support an array of wildlife, especially species that rely on strong ground and shrub habitats, like the American Woodcock and Pennsylvania’s state bird, the Ruffed Grouse.\n\nFollow Preserve Manager Michael Hock and Ruffed Grouse Society guide James Boburka as you venture off-trail into dense cover, exploring habitat that few hikers ever experience. With the help of highly trained RGS dogs, we’ll search for migrating American Woodcock and, if luck is on our side, resident Ruffed Grouse. Along the way you’ll:\n\n\n\nListen for the bells worn by working dogs and learn how GPS is used to track them\n\n\nDiscover what makes high-quality versus declining forest habitat\n\n\nUnderstand the role of ground cover, shrubs, and young forests in wildlife success\n\n\nLearn about current forest health challenges like Beech Leaf Disease and the loss of keystone species\n\n\nHear how Wildlands and RGS are partnering to restore and protect critical habitat in our region\n\n\n\nPlease note: Parts of this program will take you off the groomed trails and through uneven, wet, and marshy terrain. Be prepared for challenging ground conditions that may be difficult to navigate.\nMeeting Location\nBlakeslee Wawa\ndata-start="2092" data-end="2095" /> 296 PA-940, Blakeslee, PA 18610\ndata-start="2126" data-end="2129" /> 41.09237N / 75.59160W\nWhat to Bring\n\nSturdy footwear\n\n\nHeavy long pants (for off-trail hiking)\n\n\nWater & snacks\n\nWhat Not to Bring\nWhile Wildlands preserves typically welcome dogs, dogs are not permitted on this hike, as trained RGS working dogs will be in the field and must remain focused.\n\nDon’t miss this rare chance to step into the habitat of forest birds and see first-hand how conservation work is shaping the future of our woodlands.\n\nSpace is limited — reserve your spot today!\nFor program questions, contact Nicole Landis at Nlandis@wildlandspa.org\n\n\nFor details, click here: https://engage.wildlandspa.org/calendar/event/379
